The list of 30 candidates for the 2023 Ballon d'Or award has been fully announced, with Messi leading the way and Mbappé and Haaland among the nominees. Cristiano Ronaldo did not make the cut. The 2023 Ballon d'Or award ceremony will take place at the Châtelet Theatre in Paris on October 31st, where this year's Ballon d'Or, Women's Ballon d'Or, Kopa Trophy, and Yachine Trophy winners will be revealed.

The 2023 Ballon d'Or awards ceremony will be the 67th annual awards ceremony hosted by "France Football" magazine. This marks the second time in the history of the award that it will be based on performances during a season rather than a calendar year.

The 2023 Ballon d'Or will take into account a player's performances throughout the 2022/23 season, including their performances at the Qatar World Cup.

Only representatives from countries ranked in the top 100 of the FIFA men's rankings (top 50 for women's football) are eligible to vote. When evaluating player performances, the Ballon d'Or is an individual award, so a player's personal performance will be the primary consideration. Team collective performances, including records created, will also be taken into account. Finally, the fair play attitude of the player will be considered.

The 2023 Ballon d'Or features a list of 30 male nominees, along with a list of 30 female nominees for the Women's Ballon d'Or, 10 nominees for the Yachine Trophy, and 10 nominees for the Kopa Trophy.
